The Adventures of Roy the Koi

By Deirdre W.

Roy was a beautiful fish called a Koi. Roy loves to splash and swim in water. He lived in a beautiful pond and every now and then, a giant comes out of his home to feed Roy tasty fish pellets.

But you see Roy was not an ordinary fish he had many amazing adventures that his owner did not know about.

Everyday a beautiful butterfly came to visit him and tell him about the world beyond. The butterfly spoke of many wondrous things that she sees in the outside world.

She talks about the beautiful yellow, blue, red, and orange flowers that she visits. Roy is sad because he cannot see the colors of the flowers that she speaks of. The butterfly talks about the beautiful sky that she carelessly flies through every day.

Roy is saddened and envious that he too cannot see the things the beautiful butterfly talks about.

Roy also has a dragonfly come visit his pond every day to get a drink of water. Roy asks the dragonfly about the beauty that he is missing. The dragonfly tells Roy to never mind the stories the butterfly speaks about because he can tell him about greater adventures.

As the dragonfly’s wings shutter he speaks of the dramatic ponds that he visits all the time. He tells Roy of the lakes filled with plenty of different fish, turtles, and beautiful plants. Roy gets very excited not realizing that there is any other form of water out in the world.

The dragonfly tells Roy that not only are there lakes, but there are oceans that have bigger fish and turtles and magnificent plants and corals. Roy asks the dragonfly to take him to the places he speaks about, but the dragonfly shutters his wings and flies away.

Roy is so sad because he only knows his home in the pond and the giant that comes out to feed him now and again.

Suddenly a squirrel comes to the pond and tells Roy not to despair. Roy says he wants to see these other places.

The squirrel tells Roy not to be a nutty fish that he can tell him of magnificent places that he goes to.

The squirrel talks about the giant oak trees that he has climbed. He speaks of the beautiful magnolia trees that he passes through. He even tells Roy about his secret hiding place for his nuts that he collects for the winter.

Roy begs the squirrel to take him to the trees and his hiding place, but the squirrel scats off and tells Roy maybe some other time.

Roy whimpers quietly as a beautiful bunny rabbit hops up to the pond to see his reflection in the water. The bunny ask Roy why he is so sad and Roy tells him the stories of the others adventures.

The bunny tells Roy not to be so gloomy. The Bunny tells Roy about the maze of boroughs that he has dug beneath the earth. The bunny tells of the earthworms beneath and talks about the roots of the vegetable plants.

Roy begs the bunny to take him to these places, but the bunny starts to hop off and tells him perhaps some other day. Again, Roy silently weeps and wishes he was not a simple stupid fish.

Suddenly a big black crow lands besides the pond and startles Roy. Roy asks the crow what it wants. The crow helps himself to a mosquito buzzing about the pond.

The crow swallowed the nasty mosquito and stated, “I just wanted lunch.” Roy said where are you going to now? The crow spreads his black shiny wings and says I am off to travel the sky and soar through the clouds.

Roy asks the crow if he can come along, but the crow flaps his wings and flies away. Roy is very sad and somberly swims about the pond.

Suddenly a big black cat comes up to the pond and asks Roy if he wants to go on an adventure. Roy becomes so excited and starts splashing about in the water. The cat starts licking his lips and his green eyes become as big as saucers.

Suddenly a deep-throated voice yells out from the corner of the pond. “Don’t go with that sly black cat!” It is the voice of Mr. Frog. Mr. Frog tells Roy not to believe the cat or he might be the cat’s lunch. The black cat swats his tail in the air and scampers off.

The frog explains to Roy that the adventure he is seeking is right at home in his own pond. He tells Roy that of all the characters that he had met and listened to their adventures, not one can live in a pond!

Mr. Frog explains to Roy that if their life was so adventurous, then why do they come to his pond every day? Roy thought about what the frog said and swam off happily in the pond waiting for his giant to come feed him some delicious fish pellets.

Do not let others discourage you and turn you away. One day instead of being a tiny fish in a giant pond, you can be a huge fish in a tiny pond and be whatever you want to be. Be positive, love yourself, and always do what is right.

The End

Congratulations, Deirdre. Even though I truly wanted to win that illustration, I think their selection of your story was right on target! It was one of my favorite stories and I have already told this one to my granddaughter, Emma. Plus, it had a frog in the story, so you know that makes it special to this frog story teller! Congratulations again and I look forward to seeing your illustrations. Bonnie Harrison
