The Story of Mr. Grump [Audio]

By Nicole V.

Author’s Note: I have included both the audio and text versions of The Story of Mr. Grump.  Mr. Grump was an integral part of my daughter’s late toddler/early pre-school years.  When she couldn’t describe something in her body that was wrong, I would ask her where Mr. Grump was bothering her and she could point to an ear or her tummy or any spot that hurt.

There is a little fellow
You may not know by name
But he is always near you
And mischief is his aim

We call him Mr. Grump
And sometimes when he is bad
He jumps in your mouth
Yelling “NO” to mom and dad!

Mr. Grump crawls in your tummy
And makes you feel all queasy
Nothing makes you any better
Except eggs over easy

But if Mr. Grump should come
And mess up your good day
Just tell him very firmly
It’s time to go away

“Mr. Grump not in my mouth!
Nice words are my thing.”

“Mr. Grump here is some food
To stop that rumbling.”

He can make a throb or ache
Somewhere inside of you
An achy ache you can’t shake
No matter what you do

When Mr. Grump blinds your eyes
Everything becomes yours
You don’t share with anyone
You grab at things in stores

But if Mr. Grump should come
And mess up your good day
Just tell him very firmly
It’s time to go away

“Mr. Grump you’re hurting me!
And I can show you where.”

“Mr. Grump that is not mine,
It’s very nice to share.”

Even when you are sleepy
So tired you could drop
Mr. Grump gets you moving
And you can’t seem to stop

When he plugs up your ears
It’s like talking to a wall
You don’t hear mom or dad
You don’t listen well at all

But if Mr. Grump should come
And mess up your good day
Just tell him very firmly
It’s time to go away

“Mr. Grump let’s go to sleep
I really need my rest.”

“Mr. Grump I need to hear
My parents, they know best.”

There is a little fellow
Mr. Grump is his name
He may linger close to you
But you can beat his game

If Mr. Grump still insists
On wrecking your good day
A little bit of loving
Will surely make him stray

Hug and kiss your mother
Cuddle up with dad
Help your little brother
Cheer up someone sad

Mr. Grump won’t stick around
When you are being sweet
Love someone close to you
He’ll beat on hasty feet

Love this poem! It would certainly make a great book for youngsters who can't describe something in their body that is wrong. Very clever way of having them help the parent know what is troubling them.
