The Sleep Blogger
Nice bed, but the price tag will keep you awake
The Sleep Blogger had a Marie Antoinette moment the other day. Or more precisely, he had a French-peasant moment when he read about the $33,000 mattress available to big spenders. He could almost hear the exchange between M.A. and her courtier:
“My Queen, your subjects are unhappy! They have nothing but filthy straw upon which to lay their weary heads at night.”
“Well, let them obtain the hand-tufted, king-size Palais Royale mattress and box spring. I hear it’s quite comfortable.”

Marie Antoinette: After the cake, better mattresses!
Really. The Sleep Blogger doesn’t make this stuff up (except, of course, the imagined conversations of soon-to-be headless royalty). According to Fox News, the Palais Royale — manufactured by E.S. Kluft & Co. — is the country’s most expensive bed. If you already have one and want an upgrade, there’s a more expensive sleep set in the pipeline: The company will roll out its $44,000 Sublime model later this year.
Still not upscale enough for you? Then try the Swedish-made Vividus king-size mattress set, which carries a $69,500 price tag. What do you get for that money? Fox News explains:
… it takes 160 hours to assemble this mattress entirely by hand, which has a Swedish-pine frame with thick layers of horsehair, cotton, flax and wool inside.
And if you want to literally sleep on your bling, an Italian mattress maker will sell you a bed with 22-carat gold embedded in the fabric. That way, you’ll really feel like Marie Antoinette. The Sleep Blogger, alas, will always be the peasant. C’est la vie.
