The Sleep Blogger
Veddy good advice, eh wot?
There are huge gaps in the Sleep Blogger’s body of information, holes so large that hardly a day goes by that he doesn’t learn something and say to himself: “Really? How did I not know that?” It’s particularly embarrassing when it comes to popular culture. For instance, he didn’t know until yesterday that actress Gwyneth Paltrow operates a Web site called Goop.com, where she shares “the vast cache of knowledge she has acquired as a result of being beautiful, wealthy and famous” — as one notably snarky reader put it.

Gwyneth, all knackered
OK, Paltrow is a California girl who’s acquired all sorts of British mannerisms now that she lives in London, which makes her only slightly less of a target of mockery than Madonna, a Detroit girl who likewise acquired a Continental veneer when she moved to England (and somehow made it even more insufferable). But the Sleep Blogger forgives her — Gwyneth, not Madonna — because she recently addressed a topic near to his heart on her site:
Basically everyone I know is knackered, me included. But I didn’t imagine that there could be health problems associated with not getting a good night’s rest. I recently read a book called “Light’s Out: Sleep, Sugar and Survival” by T.S. Wiley which talks about the negative cumulative effects of sleep deprivation (aging, hormonal imbalances, etc.) I asked one of my doctors, Frank Lipman, for his opinion on the subject and the result is the fascinating piece below, followed by some suggestions on ways to sleep better.
Let’s get some shuteye, people.
“Knackered”? See, that’s what we’re talking about. That’s not a word she learned growing up in Santa Monica. Still, all pretension aside, it’s nice of Paltrow to share some tips. Even nicer is her invocation of the phrase “sleep better.” Why, somebody could build a Web site around that phrase.
