Sleep Myth Monday: Sleeping for 25 Years?

This is the latest installment of a regular feature here at SleepBetter.org: Sleep Myth Monday, where we bust sleep myths wide open, or verify that they’re actually not myths at all.

Myth or Truth:  The average person spends approximately 25 years of their life sleeping.

TRUTH

It’s all based on approximation, but the average person who sleeps the average amount and lives the average length will spend 25 years of their life sleeping.  Here’s a look at how we did the math:

The average person *should* get seven to eight hours per night as an adult. They *should* get more than that as a child, which means that even less-than-average adult sleepers may average out as getting more than they think over their lifetime. If the average life expectancy is upwards of 80 years, then it works out that you sleep for around 25 years in your life.
