There’s a good post on the New York Times blogs this week, looking into the causes of snoring and how it can be reduced or prevented.
The common misconception is those sharing a room with a snorer should just roll their noisy roommate over. However, the Times quotes a 2009 study that shows position doesn’t always matter:
Scientists say there are two types of snorers: those who snore only when they sleep on their backs, and those who do it regardless of their position. After sleep researchers in Israel examined more than 2,000 sleep apnea patients, for example, they found that 54 percent were “positional,” meaning they snored only when asleep on their backs. The rest were “nonpositional.”
The Times says the biggest factor in snoring is weight. While it’s not the easiest solution, slimming down is the best way to cure snoring.
