Time for sleep Q&A with Dr. Lisa Shives, our sleep expert!  We gather questions from our Facebook page, and they’re answered by Dr. Shives.  In this installment, Dr. Lisa talks about a co-sleeping with your partner.

Josh Campos asks: I have a hard time sleeping next to my girlfriend. Our sleep schedules are very different. But, I also usually have a hard time sleeping next to people in general. Do you have any suggestions?

Dr. Lisa says: SLEEP ALONE.  It is a modern notion that it will damage a relationship if partners sleep separately.  A hundred years ago, it was common for husbands and wives to have separate bedrooms if they had a large enough home. I think that sleep deprived people who blame their bed partners for a restless night will find that they have some serious tension in the relationship.

Dr. Shives works with SleepBetter.org to provide a medical view of sleep issues. She is one of only a few practitioners with a fellowship in Sleep Medicine in addition to board certification by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Sleep Medicine.
