Cut the carbs, go for protein

When you’re tired, your body sends a cue to your brain that you need to fuel up. Unfortunately, we tend to reach for high-calorie and high-fat carbs for quick, instant energy. But that burst of energy they provide is short-lived and you’re jonesing for another chocolate bar in no time. And snack choices don’t just affect your weight. As the number on the scale creeps up, your sleeping problems can get worse, continuing the cycle of exhaustion.

As 3:00pm creeps up and you feel like you need to refuel, avoid the vending machine and try one of these snacks instead:

  • Spoonful of peanut butter and a couple slices of apple
  • Handful of almonds (unsalted, preferably)
  • Yogurt
  • A few carrot sticks
  • Trail mix
  • A couple slices of turkey
