Sleep Deprived Honeybees Don't Dance Well [Video]

Sleepy bees can’t dance.

We have researchers to thank for this knowledge, and video to prove it.  The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that the tired bees lag just like sleep-deprived humans do. Scientists kept bees from getting their normal eight hours of sleep per night (they used magnets attached to the bees’ backs to keep them awake), and then observed their bee behavior.  The researchers found that the sleep-deprived bees performed less precise waggle dances.  Those dances don’t happen only when the latest top 40 hit is playing — they’re the bees’ form of communication.
