Sleep Myth Monday: Caffeine and Sleep

This is the latest installment of a regular feature here at SleepBetter.org: Sleep Myth Monday, where we bust sleep myths wide open, or verify that they’re actually not myths at all.

Myth or Truth: If you want to sleep better, you don’t have to give up coffee.

TRUTH

Drinking coffee right after you get up, or shortly thereafter, will not impact your sleep that night. Where you may get into trouble, however, is if you drink it a few hours before bedtime. Caffeine does impact people in different ways, as evidenced by the many people who answered that they drink coffee every night and sleep just fine. However, if you’re having trouble getting to sleep, take a look at when you have that last cup of coffee for the day, and try to eliminate it.
