New research shows that a sleep disorder may be linked to the onset of Parkinson’s disease. The sleep disorder in question is called rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, or RBD. RBD occurs when when a slumbering person physically acts out their dreams while asleep. During a research study conducted at the Mayo Clinic it was found that people who were diagnosed with the rare condition of RBD were twice as likely to develop Parkinsons within 4 years of their diagnosis of the sleep condition. Although this link in the disorders in unfortunate, it can be a tool for doctors to use to better diagnosis and early detection of Parkinson’s once their patient shows signs of RBD.
