After a stressful day on the job some may indulge in a late night drink in an attempt to take the edge off or even in order to get to sleep faster. Although this method may seem beneficial at the time, a new study confirms that this is not be the best idea. The study, conducted Akita University in Japan, showed that drinking alcohol before heading to bed at night interfered with the restorative functions of sleep.
During the research, ten participants were observed over a three week span. The participants were given three different types of alcohol each week and then tested accordingly. In the end it was found that drinking an excess of alcohol affected the nervous system in the body which helps to regulate restful sleep. The variations in heart rates among the participants showed this disturbance in sleep which stemmed from the nervous system interruption.
