Sleep Disorders

Women sometimes experience sleep disorders much differently than men. One reason for this is the monthly cyclic shift in hormones, producing a wide range of symptoms known as pre-menstrual syndrome. For some women, there’s a definite pattern of sleeplessness or difficulty staying asleep during certain times of the month. Luckily, this is usually short-lived and disappears when all of the other pre-menstrual symptoms disappear. Noted medical authorities estimate that three out of every four menstruating women experience at least some form of pre-menstrual syndrome, including sleep dysfunction.

Physicians believe that the sleeplessness that sometimes comes with pre-menstrual disorders is caused by a combination of hormonal shifts in the body during that time of the month, and a drop in serotonin. Serotonin is a brain neurotransmitter that regulates mood states. When you look at these symptoms and the reasons behind them, it’s hard to imagine how a new mattress or viscous foam pillow will change things. The truth is, they might not. However, if you’re sleeping on a really old mattress without proper support, you should seriously consider investing in quality bedding. It’s easy to focus on other things that we need in our lives, but when it comes right down to it, that lump of foam we sleep on every night plays a hugely important role in our health. Better health and well-being makes for a better night’s rest and when you’re healthy and well-rested, those pre-menstrual symptoms may not be as severe.

There are some sleep disorder and dysfunctions you can manage on your own, and others that might need the help of a physician. Do your part by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and supporting your healthy sleep with a good quality mattress, mattress topper, and pillow. It’s easy to want to spend money on the things that we wear, or things that other people will be able to see and comment on. But really, when it comes right down to it, if you’re sleeping well on a comfortable, top quality mattress, your friends and family will see something. They’ll see you, happy, well-rested and looking your best.

A new mattress may or may not help with pre-menstrual symptoms, but it’s probably safe to say that the better rested you are, the better you’re going to feel at any time of the month.
