It wouldn’t be surprising to hear that loneliness can cause trouble falling asleep. However, a new study reveals that it can also wake you in the middle of the night. The research, released by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, shows that loneliness can cause multiple night wakings. During the study, nearly 100 adults wore wristbands while they slept. The bands measured the amount of times the person’s sleep was disrupted. Participants also completed a loneliness scale. The higher the score on the loneliness scale, the higher number of times they woke up in the middle of the night. In addition the researchers note that the feelings of loneliness that are disrupting people’s sleep are closely connected with perceived connectedness to others.
