Onset of Diabetes Linked to Sleep

A new study shows that lack of sleep or even disrupted sleep can increase the risk of diabetes. The study, published in Science Translational Medicine,  researched the link between diabetes and sleep by studying 21 men and women over a three week period. These participants slept in a sleep lab for the duration of the study period and were getting only 5 and a half hours of sleep per 28 hours.  Due to the small amount of sleep and frequent interruptions, the participants metabolism and insulin levels quickly decreased. Changes in body such as these lead to weight gain and blood sugar increases associated with diabetes.
