People sometimes joke around about old TV shows like I Love Lucy, where the main characters sleep in separate twin beds despite being married and eventually having a child. But, new research is echoing advice given by our own Dr. Lisa Shives in a recent Ask Dr. Lisa, that the best way to get a good night’s sleep is to sleep alone.
Researchers from Central Queensland University surveyed more than 13,000 people, and the results may be startling for those who like to snuggle while sleeping. They found that sleeping with someone else in the bed with you causes major disturbances to your sleep cycle. A full two-thirds of participants reported waking up during the night every night. More than a third of those who reported being awakened reported that the reason was snoring noises coming from their bed partner. Movement from their sleep partner was also a major problem.
While it may not seem like that big of a deal to wake up a few times in the night, many respondents (33%) said that they have called in sick from work because they were so tired from being kept awake at night.
